Q. When opening a CSV text file, why does an empty window appear?

A.

No line in a CSV text file should contain more then 512 characters (including whitespace). If any line does, the window that would show the file content will instead be empty. This limitation is a bug that will be fixed in a future release.

Q. When mapping ZIP Code® Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs™), why do some states have small irregular areas missing around the edges?

A.

A few ZCTAs™ extend into other states. One reason for this is a post office located adjacent to a state boundary may serve an area on both sides of the state boundary. At present, OwlView does not support regions which cross state boundaries and so an empty area will occur for the part of the ZCTA™ in the adjacent state.

Q. What can I do about the "Memory is getting full" message I sometimes encounter when creating maps using Mac OS 9?

A.

To make additional memory available for OwlView, go to the Finder and select (single click) the OwlView application icon. Then select the Get Info > Memory item on the File menu. Set the Preferred Size as explained below. Be sure to quit OwlView, if it is running, before doing this or you will not be abled to modify the size value.

OwlView needs about 1.5MB for itself plus about 1.75 x filesize of each open basemap. Basemaps vary from 20K to 6M depending upon size of state and level of detail. Basemap files can be found in the Places folder within the same folder as the OwlView application. To determine which basemap you are using for a particular map, select the Get Base Map item on the Map menu and then choose values for the popup menus to match the map you are trying to make. Do not actually get the map (you probably already have it); just look at the filename (ignoring the filename extension) in the dialog and then look for the same filename in the Places folder.

Setting OwlView's Memory Preferred Size is merely a request. The amount of preferred memory must actually be available in order for OwlView to use it. To check on the available free memory, go to the Finder and select About This Computer on the Apple menu before launching OwlView. Look at the value of the Largest Unused Block in the window wthat appears. This value must be larger than OwlView's Memory Preferred Size. If it is not larger, you need to quit other appliactions to free up memory or else add more memory to the machine.

Q. Why does the OwlView DMG file fail to open using Mac OS 9?

A.

OwlView is distributed using a Mac OS X disk image (DMG) file. To open this file using Mac OS 9, the Disk Copy preference Validate Checksum must be off. If it is not off, you will encounter the message "The Mount Image operation did not complete (-50)."

To disable checksum validation, select Disk Copy's Edit > Preferences… menu item and uncheck Validate Checksum. If you do not intend to frequently use other Mac OS X disk images, you should recheck Validate Checksum after you have copied OwlView to your hard drive.
